Luke Hitchcock’s Gravestone

Luke Hitchcock was a contractor on the original Erie Canal in Oneida and Madison Counties. In the very first months of construction, Hitchcock supplied stone and his talents as a stone mason to build culverts and aqueducts.  With the first enlargement, he and his sons continued their stonework. The carving of the canal aqueduct on his gravestone, likely done by him, demonstrates the pride people had in the canal and their involvement with it.
